DHCP Configuration for Windows 2000/XP

From the desktop, right-click on "My Network Places" and select "Properties" from the drop-down menu.

You will receive the following window:

Double-click the "Local Area Connection" icon to get the following window:

Click the "Properties" button to get the following menu:

If you do NOT see a line similar to "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", you cannot access the Internet and must contact the DMS help desk to have the TCP/IP protocol installed on your workstation. If the protocol is not installed and you feel comfortable doing so, install the protocol using the "Install…" button before proceeding (you will need your operating system installation CD(s) as well as drivers from your network interface card in order to complete the process).

Continue with the Dynamic address setup by selecting "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and clicking the "Properties" button. You will see the following screen:

If the screen looks EXACTLY like this, you are already configured for Dynamic addressing. Close all open windows by pressing the "OK" or "Close" buttons as appropriate. Shut down the computer. Plug your laptop into an active computer wall-plate in the conference center (check with conference staff for which plates are active). Turn on the computer and log into your LOCAL account on the laptop. You are ready to use the Internet.

However, if the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties" page looks more like the one below, you will need to perform additional proceedures.

Write down ALL of the numbers in the EXACT order that you see them on this screen. You will need them later when you are finished using the NCI-Frederick campus network.

Click the "Advanced…" buttton.

Click on the "DNS" tab of this window and record the settings.

Click on the "WINS" tab and record the settings you see there.

Click the "Cancel" button to return to the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" screen (see above). From this screen, click the TOP radio button (labled "Obtain an IP address automatically"). LEAVE ALL OTHER SETTINGS ALONE. The screen should look like this:

Press the "OK" button to return to the "Local Area Connection Properties" window. Press the "OK" button to return to the "Local Area Connection Status" window. Press the "Close" button to return to the "Network and Dial-up Connections" window. Close this window by pressing the "X" in the top-right corner.

Shut down the computer. Plug your laptop into an active computer wall-plate in the conference center (check with conference staff for which plates are active). Turn on the computer and log into your LOCAL account on the laptop. You are ready to use the Internet.

To return your computer to NORMAL use after making the above changes, use the same procedure to enter the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties" screen. Click the 2nd radio button (labled "Use the following IP address"). Re-enter all of the information recorded prior to making the change to Dynamic addressing. Click the "Advanced" button and re-enter all lost information recorded on each of the screens. Press the "OK" or "Close" buttons as appropriate to close each window.

Shut down your computer and disconnect it from the network. Your system is now back to normal and should be able to be used in your normal work environment.
