Cummings: Bush Budget is More of the Same Recklessness

Washington, DC— Today, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (Md.-07) released the following statement in response to the FY 2009 budget proposed by President Bush:

“For seven years, President Bush has exercised reckless spending and poor budgetary priorities. These irresponsible practices have left our country in shambles. As recession looms in the background, more hardworking families are finding themselves without jobs, health care, or homes.

“Continuing on this track the President has presented Congress with a budget that would slash health care for seniors and working families and starve many programs—such as job training resources—that are needed now more than ever.

“President Bush managed to turn a record surplus into a record deficit and has, in fact, presided over the five largest deficits in our nation’s history. Through it all, he has assured the American people that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. In his final budget proposal, we see only darkness with more of the same thoughtless spending policies. I am committed to working with my colleagues to craft a bipartisan response that will responsibly fund critical programs to ensure that we can get back on track toward recovering our economy.”
