Cummings Introduces Resolution Honoring UMD School of Medicine

Washington, DCToday, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (Md.-07) introduced a resolution to congratulate the 200th Anniversary of the University of Maryland School of Medicine and recognize its outstanding achievements both in the medical community and the community at large.

“Through its excellence in education, research, patient care, and services, the UMD Medical School has been good for our health—our physical health, the health of our medical profession, the health of our community livelihood, and the health of our state’s economy,” Congressman Cummings said. “For 200 years, the Medical School has been a pillar upon which our community rests, and it is my honor to introduce a resolution to honor its achievements.”

The University of Maryland School of Medicine was the first public school of medicine established in the United States. As one of the country’s fastest-growing research institutions, it ranks in the top twenty for research grants awarded to medical schools nationwide—receiving more than $344 million in research awards last year alone.

In the last fiscal year, the School of Medicine generated $676.3 million in revenue, and the spending for the school and its faculty practice plan last year amounted to $1.5 billion, or about five percent of the total state economy. In addition to its outstanding work in research and medicine, the school also boasts 250,000 hours of community service contributed by faculty and staff annually.

“There is no arguing that the School of Medicine brings a vitality to our City and our State through its contributions to the economy, the community, and the healthcare system overall,” Congressman Cummings said. “While those of us in the City of Baltimore and the State of Maryland recognize its importance to our community, the resolution that I introduced today will raise that recognition to the higher level that is deserved.”
