Washington, DC Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.) released the following statement in response to President Bush’s remarks this morning at the White House Rose Garden:

“I am deeply disappointed in President Bush’s remarks this morning, although I am—as usual—not surprised that he would try to mislead the American people by attempting to cast Congress as ineffective and failing to act on critical legislation.

“The truth is, this Congress has passed more legislation than any other Congress in the same period of time, with a quality exceeding anything we have seen in years. From landmark investments in education to innovative energy policy to providing millions of underprivileged children with health insurance, the House of Representatives has continuously fought to bring America back on the right track, a path from which President Bush and the Republican Congress have recklessly deviated.

“If President Bush were truly concerned about progress in America, about funding our government and troops, and about helping save American taxpayers from hardship, he would cooperate with Congress in lieu of vetoing Americans’ priorities and coming on national television to broadcast more of his unfounded rhetoric in an attempt to shift the blame for his refusal to act.

“It is time to stop the deception and blame-shifting and start working together to protect our families. President Bush can, and in fact must, do better. Americans deserve more.”
