WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Delahunt today announced the winners of this year’s Congressional Art Competition which featured entries from 25 different communities in the Tenth District.
“This exhibition is an illustration of the talent and potential of our young people and underscores the enduring value of arts education,” said Delahunt. “I want to commend all of the students that entered as well as their parents and teachers for instilling their desire to pursue an interest in art.”
This past Friday, all of the entries were exhibited in a reception for participants and their families at the Duxbury Art Complex. Tyler Tamburo was awarded the “Best of Show” prize. Tyler attends Norwell High School. His winning piece was titled “Charles Babbage: Inventor of the Computer”. He has been offered a $20,000 scholarship to the Savannah School of Design in Savannah GA. Southwest Airlines generously donated three roundtrip tickets to Tyler and his parents to attend the national reception held in Washington, DC this June.
The national exhibition of outstanding high school artwork will be exhibited in the Cannon Tunnel, a pedestrian walkway leading to the United States Capitol Building, for a full year alongside other winning entries form across the country. Since 1982, over 5,000 local contests have been conducted that have involved more than 650,000 high school students. With over 100 participants from Quincy to Provincetown, this year’s competition was one of the largest since its inception in 1997.
Congressman Delahunt expressed special thanks to this year’s panel of judges: Joan Brancale is an award winning artist from Dennis. Lance Keimig is from Pembroke and is a commercial photographer. Lance has been teaching at the New England School of Photography since 1997. Diane Scott is an award winning plein air painter from Hingham.
