A key requirement of TCGA is high-quality biospecimens. The initial set of institutions selected to contribute cancer collections to TCGA was announced in Fall 2006. However, the number of biorepositories affiliated with TCGA will fluctuate as necessary to accommodate the numbers of specimens needed to support statistical validity.

The biorepositories that contribute biospecimens play a key role in TCGA beyond being the source of high-quality, clinically-documented human tissue collections. The Principal Investigators who collected these resources are members of the project’s steering committee and provide their biomedical expertise in guiding the project.

As of October, 2008, the institutions contributing biospecimens for TCGA include:

Glioblastoma multiforme biospecimens:

  • Duke University, Durham, North Carolina
  • Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, California
  • Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia
  • Henry Ford Hospital System, Detroit, Michigan
  • Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota
  • MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas
  • Toronto Western Hospital, Ontario, Canada
  • University of California at San Francisco Medical Center, San Francisco, California
  • University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio

Squamous cell carcinoma of lung biospecimens:

  • Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota
  • MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas
  • The Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Serous cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary biospecimens:

  • Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, California
  • Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota
  • MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas
  • Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, New York
  • University of California at San Francisco Medical Center, San Francisco, California
  • Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri
