I TCGA Research Network

TCGA involves a broad cross-section of the cancer research community, including basic and clinical researchers, bioethicists, doctors, nurses, cancer patients, and advocates. TCGA is a network of four components, each critical to the success of the project:

Biospecimen Core Resource – Tissue samples will be carefully catalogued, processed, checked for quality, and stored, complete with important medical information about the patient. Descriptors that may connect a sample with the patient’s private information will be removed.
Click here to read more about the Biospecimen Core Resource.

Biorepositories Contributing to TCGA - A key requirement of TCGA is high-quality biospecimens. The initial set of institutions selected to contribute cancer collections to TCGA was announced in Fall 2006.

Cancer Genome Characterization Centers – High-throughput genome sequencing centers will identify the changes in the DNA sequence that are associated with specific types of cancer. Click here to read more about the Cancer Genome Characterization Centers.

Genome Sequencing Centers – Several technologies will be used to analyze the genetic changes involved in cancer. The genetic changes that are identified will be further studied by the genome sequencing centers. Click here to read more about the Genome Sequencing Centers.

Data Management, Bioinformatics, and Computational Analysis, including a TCGA Data Coordinating Center – The information that is generated by TCGA will be centrally managed at the Data Coordinating Center and entered into public databases as it becomes available.
