TCGA Workshop: Genomics and Biology of Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM)

On March 24, 2008, the NCI and NHGRI held a workshop entitled, “Genomics and Biology of Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM),” to review the initial GBM data from the TCGA Pilot Project. The meeting also featured presentations by participating centers in TCGA to share the initial findings and discussions on the challenges of translating this information. John Niederhuber, M.D., Director of the NCI, led the introductory presentation with opening remarks given by Anna D. Barker, Ph.D., Deputy Director.

Daniela S. Gerhard, Ph.D., introduced each session featured at the workshop. Special presentations from participating centers in TCGA were held by Eric Lander, Ph.D., Stephen Baylin, M.D., Neil Hayes, M.D., Paul Spellman, Ph.D., Cameron Brennan, M.D., and Matthew Meyerson, M.D., Ph.D. Closing presentation was given by Lynda Chin, M.D. The workshop may be viewed in its entirety via the event webcast.

TCGA Data Portal Workshop

On January 10, 2008, the TCGA Project Team hosted a Data Portal workshop to engage experts in gleaning suggestions for new features and future iterations of the Pilot Project Data Portal. The meeting focused on three main topics: 1) Discussing the Pilot Project and implications of cancer genomic information on cancer research, clinical practice, and health outcomes; 2) Highlighting the current external tools available for analysis of TCGA data; and 3) Generating suggestions for future iterations of the Data Portal. An overview of the breakout sessions and conclusion of the Data Portal workshop are described in the Summary Report.

TCGA Data Release Workshop

In May 2006, NCI and NHGRI convened a “TCGA Data Release Workshop” in Queens, New York. Workshop participants included representatives from genomic data production centers, genomic sequencers, bioinformatics data users, journal editors, cancer biologists, clinical researchers, patient advocates, data users from pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, intellectual property experts, and regulatory agency representatives. Participants provided suggestions for the development of a TCGA pilot project data release policy and discussed strategies to balance the need to make the data publicly available while protecting data integrity and maintaining patient privacy. Information about this workshop is available in the Summary Report.

Toward a Comprehensive Genomic Analysis of Cancer

In July 2005, NCI and NHGRI convened a workshop in Washington, D.C. entitled "Toward a Comprehensive Genomic Analysis of Cancer." This workshop brought together physicians, basic scientists, and other members of the U.S. and international cancer communities to assist in outlining the most effective strategies for the development of a successful project.  Information about this workshop is reported in the Executive Summary.
