What is TYCTWD?
TYCTWD stands for Take Your Child To Work Day. It was created to introduce children, ages 6 to 13, to the vital public services that their parents provide in the support of NCI-Frederick's/Ft. Detrick's mission and to encourage future careers in science. If possible, you are encouraged to spend some time in your work area with your child so they can see what you do and meet your coworkers.

When will TYCTWD be?
Wednesday, July 30, 2008 - RAIN OR SHINE

What time will the events occur?
7:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Who is the day for?
Employees are welcome to bring their children, grandchildren, nieces, and/or nephews ages 6 to 13, to work if approved by the employee's supervisor and safety rules are followed.

The events of TYCTWD are only for children, ages 6 through 13; they are not appropriate for younger children. Younger siblings are not permitted to attend the event due to limited space. TYCTWD is planned as an annual event, so those too young to participate this year will have an opportunity to attend in coming years.

Can my child attend the events by themselves?
A parent (or a designated responsible adult) must be with his/her child at all times. Any unsupervised children will not be permitted to participate in any of the days' activities. In some cases, due to limited space, adults may be asked to wait just outside the activity room.

Can my child be denied participation?
If a registered child is not wearing their TYCTWD 2008 ID badge and appropriate footwear, they will be denied access. Closed toed shoes must be worn by all to particpate. Late arrivals may also be denied access at the discretion of the Program Sponsor.

My child is too old but wants to be involved. What should he/she do?
Children 14 or older may volunteer to work at the Hub area. Just click on the child at the top of the page holding the sign "Volunteer".

How much do the events cost?
TYCTWD activities are free of charge. The only costs are for lunch and swimming, if desired. Information on ticket sales for lunch and swimming will be provided via emails, on the web site news page, and on the hotline (301-846-7400) when available.

What goes on during the day?
The day’s activities will include:

  • Scheduled Programs (requiring pre-registration)
  • Hub Activities - Outside (entertainment, demonstrations, and lunch specials open to all registered attendees) 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Science Room and other indoor hub activities (hands-on experiments) 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What's the Pre-registration?
Pre-registration is the process of picking the programs ahead of time. Once pre-registration is over, the programs will be assiged in a fair and automated manner.

Notes on pre-registration:

  • Since a maximum of three Programs are available to each child who registers, and the Programs are assigned by an automated system fair to all who register, it is recommended that you register your child for all Programs that interest him/her and are age appropriate. The more Programs you register for increases your chances to get three Programs for your child since many programs can only accommodate a very small number of children.
  • Please do not enroll a child who is not within the age range specified by the activity sponsor.
  • Please share web access with your colleagues who do not have easy access to a computer.
  • If you experience difficulty using the registration form, contact us by sending an email to kidsday@ncifcrf.gov.

What if I want to register multiple children separately?
If you only have one adult available to supervise your children on the day of the event, then you should register all children as a group under the one adult so programs appropriate for all of their ages will be made available to you. If you have more than one adult available to supervise your children, and you would like to register them separately, you may do so by registering each child under the name of the adult who will be accompanying them. The email address provided for each child may be duplicated in each record so all emails pertaining to each child go to only one individual.

What should my kids wear?

For safety reasons, please do NOT wear sandals or other open-toed shoes. Sneakers or athletic shoes are recommended. Anyone wearing open-toed shoes will NOT be permitted into laboratories, shops areas, and other facilities where safety is an issue. Be mindful of the weather. Sun block as well as umbrellas and slickers in case of rain are recommended.
