DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol)
is a used by networked computers to automatically obtain TCP/IP
configuration information such as IP address, Subnet masks,
DNS addresses, and WINS addresses.
DHCP is not to be used for normal circumstances where static
addressing is appropriate and required by the NCI-Frederick
LAN Office. (Such as Desktop PCs, Servers, Printers, etc...).
DHCP is to be used for mobile devices only (Such as Laptops,
Notebook PCs and PDAs) and is currently available in most areas
of the Frederick Campus network. . Contact the ABCC Helpdesk
(x5555) to find out if it is available in your area.
Should you wish to use DHCP, you must configure your mobile
device to use the NCI-Frederick or NIH property tag number as
the host name of the device with the exception of temporary
access to publicly accessible areas of the network.. (Follow
the instructions in the links below or contact the ABCC Helpdesk
at x5555.)
WARNING: If you are discovered using DHCP
inappropriately the LAN Office will exclude you from using it
further and you will be required to contact the ABCC Helpdesk
(x5555) to re-establish this ability.
NOTE: If your mobile device is currently configured for static
addressing, you must manually record the current configuration
before making the change to DHCP. Failure to do so will result
in the inability to connect to the network when you return to
normal activities. (Given you have no record of your static
address.) If you should lose your address and you need assistance
contact the ABCC Helpdesk at x5555.
NOTE: If you plan to use DHCP for a personally owned mobile
device (such as a laptop or PDA), you must inform ABCC prior
to connecting to the network.
