caBIG™ Seeks Broader Adoption within the Biomedical Community
Industry Experts Convened, New Materials Introduced

Building upon the accomplishments and lessons learned from its three-year Pilot Phase, caBIG™ has now transitioned to its Enterprise Phase. During this phase, caBIG™ is seeking to more broadly engage organizations—including additional NCI-designated Cancer Centers and members of the pharmaceutical, biotech, and commercial IT sectors—to achieve greater connectivity and interoperability through adopting caBIG™ infrastructure and tools, adapting existing tools/systems to be caBIG™-compatible, and participating in building and promoting interoperability standards for the biomedical community.

Accelerating Research with Effective Biobanking
caBIG™ in action at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center

There was a time not too long ago when accessing tissue samples from the biobank to conduct research at the Siteman Cancer Center involved a plethora of different people and multiple manual steps. Typically, a researcher would request a specific specimen by sending an email to the biobank manager, who manually sifted through charts and tables and then returned an email response to the researcher, usually with additional questions, before appropriate specimens were found. Researchers were frustrated with the lack of a user-friendly system that they could search directly.
