caBIG™ Seeks Broader Adoption within the Biomedical Community
Industry Experts Convened, New Materials Introduced

Building upon the accomplishments and lessons learned from its three-year Pilot Phase, caBIG™ has now transitioned to its Enterprise Phase. During this phase, caBIG™ is seeking to more broadly engage organizations—including additional NCI-designated Cancer Centers and members of the pharmaceutical, biotech, and commercial IT sectors—to achieve greater connectivity and interoperability through adopting caBIG™ infrastructure and tools, adapting existing tools/systems to be caBIG™-compatible, and participating in building and promoting interoperability standards for the biomedical community.

Getting Connected with caBIG™ Resources

In setting the stage for broader adoption of its infrastructure, interoperability framework and tools, caBIG™ has released a number of resources on the caBIG™ Community website.

Among these resources is a "Getting Connected with caBIG™: Frequently Asked Questions" document, which provides information about the tools and resources that will be made available to facilitate caBIG™-compatibility

In addition, caBIG™ has created a set of Overview Fact Sheets, each of which provide an in-depth look at specific infrastructure components and tools that are being packaged together in bundles for release in 2008. Each Fact Sheet includes information on what the tools within the bundle are designed to do, their features and benefits, and the expected implementation requirements.

caBIG™ Summit: November 8-9, 2007
To help encourage the adoption of caBIG™ technologies and standards by the broader biomedical community, caBIG™ convened the caBIG™ Community Outreach Summit. The summit brought together key leaders in academia, patient advocacy, the private sector, and government. Over 110 attendees representing companies and organizations such as Affymetrix, Inc., Baylor College of Medicine, Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, FasterCures, Hewlett-Packard Company, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa, IBM, and the Office of the Secretary of Health and Human Services gathered for the event, held in Bethesda, MD.

Ken Buetow, Ph.D., NCI Associate Director for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology, opened the Summit with an introduction to caBIG™, including details about tools, case studies, and lessons learned during the Pilot Phase. Attendees also had the opportunity to participate in working group sessions focused on Research, Market Development, and Governance. During the sessions, these leaders in research, government, and the private sector helped to identify key opportunities, issues, and challenges that need to be addressed to facilitate broader adoption of caBIG™ tools and standards.

caBIG™ Pilot Phase Report
The caBIG™ Pilot Phase Report: 2003-2007, is a summary of the progress made during the three-year Pilot Phase of caBIG™. This report presents the goals and strategic direction of the caBIG™ initiative and delineates its accomplishments and shortcomings. It sets the stage for broader caBIG™ adoption and widespread standardization that will transform biomedical research and medical care in the years to come.
