The caBIG™ initiative is providing researchers and clinicians with the tools and infrastructure they need to ask and answer complex research questions leading to improved patient outcomes. The first-ever caBIG™ World’s Fair exhibition at the 2008 caBIG™ Annual Meeting will showcase a variety of these tools and resources that are helping to drive the new “war on cancer” through integration and collaboration.

“The caBIG™ community has generated targeted tools and infrastructure that are currently being adopted or adapted in cancer centers all around the country, working to fulfill our goal of enabling personalized medicine in cancer and beyond,” said Kenneth H. Buetow, Ph.D., Associate Director for Bioinformatics and Information Technology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). “This exhibition will provide a unique opportunity for the biomedical community to connect with the tool integration experts and to learn how each tool is playing a significant role in the biomedical research continuum.”

The exhibition will showcase 18 tools in the context of a patient’s medical journey—from biospecimen collection and imaging, to genomic analysis and clinical trials patient management. Attendees will witness how the full set of tools work together to improve clinical research and patient outcomes and will experience caBIG™ connectivity through live demonstrations of caBIG™ tools throughout the World’s Fair (see sidebar for schedule). Experts will be available for questions and discussion of the benefits of each tool, as well as to explain how these tools work synergistically to simplify data exchange.

The caBIG™ World’s Fair will also provide the opportunity for attendees to view more than 100 scientific posters and to speak with the authors. In addition, representatives from the six newly designated Enterprise Support Network (ESN) Knowledge Centers will be at the World’s Fair, giving researchers a chance to find out first hand how the caBIG™ ESN can help them join the growing caBIG™ user community.

Visitors can also interact with approximately 20 exhibitors providing a range of products and services, as well as healthcare and academic centers and patient advocacy organizations. Many of the exhibitors are currently actively involved in the caBIG™ initiative as tool developers or tool adopters and adapters.

More than 100 posters will be on display at the exhibition, on a variety of topics grouped into subject categories:

  • caBIG™ infrastructure
  • Clinical trials tools and data
  • Community engagement
  • In vivo imaging
  • Molecular informatics
  • Population science and outcome research
  • Project management
  • Re-use of caBIG™ infrastructure and tools
  • Tissue banks and pathology tools
  • Translational and personalized medicine
