How to Apply

Several online resources are available across the National Institutes of Health to assist small businesses in preparing their grant applications and contract proposals.  First-time applicants to the SBIR & STTR Programs are encouraged to review these resources before submitting an application.

While there are no actual examples of SBIR contract applications available, the slides from these recent SBIR & STTR Program information sessions provide valuable insight into the application process. Please note that all contract applications must be submitted via paper application.

Examples of SBIR Grant Applications

The following Phase I and Phase II SBIR annotated applications are provided for educational purposes courtesy of Elitra Pharmaceuticals and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID).  The Summary Statements and Notices of Grant Award have been included for each application.  Other than minor changes in names and confidential salary information, the applications appear exactly as submitted.

Note: The following applications are presented using the PHS398 form pages which are no longer current. The National Institutes of Health has transitioned from paper submission of the SBIR and STTR grant applications to electronic submission via the web portal of Grants.gov. Please reference the links shown below under “Electronic Grant Submission” for the most current information on how to submit an electronic SBIR or STTR grant application.
