Lung Cancer Screening Study Spurs Optimism, Caution
Using spiral computed tomography (CT) to screen people at increased risk for lung cancer can detect the disease at an early stage and may increase the number of people who can be cured, according to the Oct. 26, 2006, New England Journal of Medicine. However, it is too soon to say whether such screening actually helps people live longer.

National Lung Screening Trial (NLST)
NLST, the National Lung Screening Trial, is a research study sponsored by the National Cancer Institute for men and women at risk for lung cancer.

Chest X-Rays Can Detect Early Lung Cancer But Also Can Produce Many False-Positive Results
A new study from the NCI shows that screening for lung cancer with chest X-rays can detect early lung cancer but can also produce many false-positive test results, causing needless extra tests. This report summarizes preliminary results from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial.

Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial
A large-scale clinical trial to determine whether certain cancer screening tests reduce deaths from prostate, lung, colorectal, and ovarian cancer. In addition, there are numerous epidemiologic and ancillary studies going on that will answer other crucial questions about these cancers and these screening tests.

Mayo Lung Project: After 20 Years, No Benefit from Chest X-rays
After tracking smokers for 20 years, a large study indicates that screening for lung cancer with chest X-rays does not save lives
