The Consumer Advocates in Research and Related Activities (CARRA) program has developed to a point where it can stand as a model program for research advocate involvement, share its resources (such as materials and experience) with others, jointly explore the growing role of public members in peer review, and serve as a resource of CARRA members for cancer-related activities in other Institutes and Centers at NIH.

One of the key leadership roles of CARRA is in the Trans-NIH Dialogue on Public Members in Peer Review, a forum for scientific and public liaison staff from across NIH to share information and issues discussion about the participation of screened, trained, experienced individuals in the peer review of research applications involving human subjects. As part of this collaboration, CARRA program staff collaborated in the development of a document titled "Public Members in Peer Review: Basic Premises."

The CARRA program also makes CARRA members available to other NIH Institutes and Centers for cancer-related research and related activities, including the peer review of cancer-related research applications involving human subjects. The mechanism to request CARRA member involvement is the CARRA Request, and you are welcome to contact us with preliminary questions or discussion.
