What We Do

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences is one of the National Institutes of Health within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The National Toxicology Program is also headquartered on the NIEHS campus in Research Triangle Park, NC. Many people are helped each year by the medical and scientific research performed by the National Institutes of Health and the National Toxicology Program. NIEHS is the organization within NIH that studies the effects of our ENVIRONMENT (everything around us!) on human health. And remember, human health is our health!

Here at NIEHS, we study environmentally caused health problems from A to Z -- like Asthma, Cancer, Lead, or even Zinc! Can you think of a health problem that might be related to our environment for every letter of the alphabet? Perhaps "B" could be for Breast Cancer! Did you know that when studying possible environmental links to breast cancer, NIEHS discovered one of the genes that causes it? There are other environmental health problems that start with B too! Which ones can you think of?

Give our A to Z Game a try! You'll have some fun, and might learn something too!

And don't forget to visit

Where does NIEHS do all this work for you?

NIEHS is located in North Carolina in a beautiful park called the Research Triangle Park. The Park is centered in the middle of a triangle formed by the cities of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. You may know that each of those cities has a major University located in it. Scientists and students from all over the world come to this area to study many things, including medical research. By working with the Universities located all around us and with many other organizations all over the world, we can share our knowledge and efforts. Two (or more!) heads are better than one! And by working together, we can produce better science for you!

Wonderful Work Environment

One of the things that NIEHS employees enjoy the most is our wonderful work "environment." We are located next to a beautiful lake that is surrounded by natural woods filled with all kinds of wildlife, including beaver, deer, and hundreds of Canada Geese!

Sometimes our Canada Geese like the NIEHS "manmade" environment more than their natural one! In fact, one "Mother Goose" decided to lay her eggs in one of our planters! We could see the little goslings peeking out beneath her. Having such a nice place to work helps NIEHS scientists do their very best when studying the many health problems that may be caused by our environment.

NIEHS has produced some of the top scientific research efforts in the world. In fact, one of our scientists even won the Nobel Prize! And many others have made discoveries that are really important to you and your family's good health!
