Public involvement in the research process - in a range of ways - is important to the National Cancer Institute and the NCI Consumer Advocates in Research and Related Activities (CARRA) program. Within the NCI Office of Advocacy Relations (OAR), CARRA program staff work collaboratively with the NCI Director's Consumer Liaison Group (DCLG) and the NCI Advocacy Outreach program .

CARRA is also connected to several public involvement initiatives of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a whole. Each of the headings below link directly to those trans-NIH sites.

Get Involved at NIH

The CARRA program is pleased to be listed under Public Input and Participation and offers its information resources and model to others.

NIH Director's Council of Public Representatives (COPR)

The members of COPR have worked on a series of projects and reports focused on the involvement of the public at various stages in the research process. CARRA program implementation and goals are very consistent with several of the recommendations in those reports, and CARRA has been pleased to provide presentations, materials, and other assistance to COPR in its work.

NIH Public Trust Initiative

The mission of the NIH Public Trust Initiative (PTI) is to enable the public to understand and to have full confidence in the research that NIH conducts and supports across the country and throughout the world. CARRA is pleased to be listed in the PTI's listing as a program which helps engender public trust in biomedical research, and is adaptable to other Institutes and Centers.
