Hedgehog Signaling Pathway in Development & Disease
2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Chair: Susan Mackem, NCI

Hedgehog (Hh) signaling controls many aspects of vertebrate embryonic development including organogenesis of many systems (CNS, cardiac, pulmonary, renal, GI, skeletal, dermal) and continues to regulate cell fate, differentiation and growth in many adult tissues. Recently, primary monocilia, present on virtually all cells, have been found to play a crucial role in Hh signal transduction. The Hh pathway has been implicated in the pathogenesis of many types of human disease, including various cancers, as well as genetic diseases and congenital malformations, and plays an important role in stem cell physiology.
