Sen. Cornyn Meets With Cardinal DiNardo

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

HOUSTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn met with Cardinal Daniel DiNardo in Houston this week to discuss several issues important to the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese and the greater Catholic community across Texas. Among the topics Sen. Cornyn and Cardinal DiNardo discussed were the defense of life, immigration reform and combating human trafficking. This was their first meeting since Cardinal DiNardo was elevated by Pope Benedict to become the first cardinal in Texas.

“Cardinal DiNardo and I had a good discussion on several issues important to the Catholic community—not only in his archdiocese, but also across Texas,” Sen. Cornyn said. “He is serving in a position of high distinction, and I commend his mission on behalf of Texans. We will work together on various areas of mutual concern, including the defense of life, strengthening families and reforming our flawed immigration system in a compassionate, comprehensive way.”

Sen. Cornyn has a strong record defending human life, including co-sponsoring the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, which the Senate passed in 2003 and was signed into law. He also chaired three Senate hearings on the defense of traditional marriage and was a strong supporter of the Defense of Marriage Act. He has been a consistent advocate of comprehensive immigration reform, including a temporary work and return program. And he has fought to end human trafficking and slavery.

In addition, Sen. Cornyn has introduced legislation to expand the Equal Access Act, a law that prohibits public secondary schools from discriminating against groups on the basis of political or religious belief.

Sen. Cornyn serves on the Armed Services, Judiciary and Budget Committees. In addition, he is Vice Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference and the Senate Select Committee on Ethics. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee’s Immigration, Border Security and Refugees subcommittee and the Armed Services Committee’s Airland subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice, and Bexar County District Judge.
