Intramural NIAID Research Opportunites (INRO)
Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research
Background
The Office of Training and Diversity (OTD) was created in 1996 to promote training programs in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Division of Intramural Research. OTD performs outreach activities to recruit students interested in exploring careers in biomedical research and designs and conducts training programs to promote diversity in the laboratories at all training levels. OTD's goals are achieved through the following initiatives:
- Management of NIAID's participation in National Institutes of Health (NIH)-wide research training programs, including postbaccalaureate and postdoctoral training, the Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research, the Undergraduate Scholarship Program, the NIH Academy, and the Graduate Partnerships Program. For information on all of NIH's training programs, visit www.training.nih.gov.
- Development of special programs, seminars, and events for intramural trainees to enhance their research experience at NIAID and broaden their professional development
- Establishment of relationships with colleges and universities to increase the visibility of the many NIAID training programs for those interested in careers in biomedical research
- Assistance to students in identifying NIAID laboratories for potential training experiences, at all levels in a variety of programs
- Conduct of outreach programs and recruitment of underrepresented minority students in science for NIAID's training programs. Planning, conducting, and evaluating Intramural NIAID Research Opportunities (INRO), a program designed to identify minority students who have an interest in training programs in allergy, immunology, and infectious diseases
- Design and management of a full spectrum of training programs to support NIAID intramural research staff at all levels. Such programs include facilitation of the annual Responsible Conduct in Research training and assistance in the mentoring of research trainees.
