A Course in Mathematical Biology: Quantitative Modeling with Mathematical & Computational Methods, G. de Vries, T. Hillen, M. Lewis, J. Mueller, and B. Schoenfisch (authors). SIAM, Philladelphia, 2006.

This textbook is geared to higher-level undergraduate students. It offers an introduction to the many aspects of mathematical modeling, including:

  • model development using difference equations, differential equations, partial differential equations, stochastic models and cellular automata
  • model analysis, including stability, bifurcations, asymptotics
  • computation in form of a self-guided Maple tutorial (note: this tutorial can be adapted to other software packages such as Mathematica or Matlab)
  • parameter estimation, including likelihood methods and Akaike Information Criterion
  • problem solving, based upon a large number of biologically relevant exercise problems through out the text
  • project work from a selection of 25 open-ended research problems from epidemiology, population dynamics, and physiology
The material for this text has been developed and tested in undergraduate summer schools between 1995 and 2005 at the University of Tuebingen and the University of Alberta. For more information check the web pages:
