Fate and Transport research is focused on defining contaminant distribution, transport, and transformation on hazardous waste sites. One integral part of this research is the development of advanced numerical, analytical and statistical models that simulate fate and transport processes of hazardous substances in and between various environmental media. Fate and transport models can be used to visualize where contamination is located and where it will likely flow given the unique set of geological, hydrological, biological and meteorological patterns at a site. With their powerful predictive capabilities, fate and transport models show when it is necessary to intervene if communities are being adversely affected by contamination, and offer a means to estimate past exposures. The information gained from fate and transport studies and models is primarily used to evaluate human, ecological and environmental risks and to guide remediation decision-making.
