Waste, Fraud, and Mismanagement

All NIH and contractor employees are reminded that they have a responsibility to assist in combating fraud, waste, and abuse in all NIH programs and are encouraged to report such matters. Moreover, Departmental policy provides that all employees have an affirmative responsibility to report any criminal offenses immediately to the Office of Inspector General (OIG), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) unless it is clear that the allegation is frivolous and has no basis in fact. The mission of the OIG is to increase the economy and efficiency of agency programs and decrease fraud, waste and abuse.

Procedure for Reporting

To assist you, the OIG maintains a hotline that offers a confidential means for reporting. You may contact the HHS OIG Hotline by phone on 1-800-HHS-TIPS (1-800-447-8477), by e-mail at tips@os.dhhs.gov, or by mail at the following address:

Persons contacting the hotline should provide a brief summary of the allegation and are encouraged to assist the OIG by providing information on how they can be contacted for additional information; however, they may remain anonymous.

The informal complaint period of 30 days can be extended up to 90 days, if you elect to use alternative dispute resolution (ADR).
