NIH Office of Human Subjects Research

The NIH’s 14 Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) review and approve intramural research activities involving human subjects. The Office of Human Subjects Research (OHSR) works closely with the IRBs and helps NIH investigators understand and comply with ethical principles and regulatory requirements involved in human subjects research. The OHSR assists with ethical issues involving human subjects by:

  • Developing and conducting educational activities for NIH
  • Assisting investigators and others in fulfilling their ethical and regulatory responsibilities when conducting collaborative human subjects research in foreign countries
  • Consulting with investigators, upon request, to help identify and resolve ethical and regulatory issues associated with the design and conduct of their human subjects research activities
  • Conducting inquiries and investigations, at the request of the Deputy Director of Intramural Research (DDIR) concerning allegations of noncompliance with 45 CFR 46 (the Federal regulations for the Protection of Human Subjects) or NIH policies and procedures concerning human subjects research
