We provide the consultative service in gynecology, including reproductive endocrinology, for the Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center. A major focus of the service is infertility diagnosis, treatment, and preservation.

Ovulation ovarian physiology

We are studying normal oocyte physiology by using immature oocytes—both fresh and frozen/thawed—to investigate cyclic AMP metabolism. We hypothesize that abnormal oocytes decrease cyclic AMP activity.

Implantation

We are recruiting a team to study implantation in the endometrium. We have identified investigators within the NICHD and are continuing to search for a team leader.

Abnormal uterine bleeding

We are developing a protocol to evaluate creative ways to treat abnormal uterine bleeding and to develop a treatment. We plan to test selective progesterone receptor antagonists and tetracycline for its effect on metalloproteinases.

Fertility preservation

Given the aggressive nature and residual effects of the cure for childhood and young adult cancer, young patients need a way to preserve their fertility. We have submitted a protocol to look at the effect of giving GnRH antagonist (Cetrotide) before chemotherapy and/or bone marrow transplant in order to preserve ovarian function. We plan to capture and freeze eggs for later use. Adult patients with profound immunologic disease will be included in the protocol.
