The mission of the University of Minnesota Cancer Center
is to advance knowledge about cancer and enhance care. The Cancer Center
is an NCI comprehensive matrix center with 8 research programs and 12
shared resource cores. The research programs, which encompass clinical,
basic and population research, are: Breast Cancer, Cancer Progression
and Metastasis, Immunology, Transplant Biology and Therapy, Carcinogenesis
and Chemoprevention, Genetic Mechanisms of Cancer, Translational Research,
and Prevention and Etiology. Over 200 Cancer Center members have been
awarded more than $70 million annually in national peer reviewed research
grants. The center is part of the University’s Academic Health
Center which includes the Medical School, Dental School, Schools of Public
Health, Nursing and Veterinary Medicine. Other research partners include
Institute of Human Genetics, Stem Cell Institute, Center for Immunology,
and the Tobacco Use Research Center, and Center for Magnetic Resonance
Imaging. Clinical research and service partners include the University
of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview and University of Minnesota Physicians.
The center benefits from broad community interactions including: participation
in the Minnesota Cancer Alliance, extensive philanthropy and a community
advisory board.
Research strengths include:
- tobacco research and lung carcinogenesis,
- murine models of oncogene discovery,
- experimental and clinical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation,
- risk factors in development of pediatric cancers and
- experimental and clinical studies of bone
pain in cancer.
