The mission of Thomas Jefferson University’s Kimmel Cancer Center,
under the leadership of its new Director, Dr. Richard G. Pestell,
M.B.B.S., M.D., Ph.D., FRACP, is to increase the survival and quality
of life of cancer patients by translating laboratory discoveries into
new strategies to prevent, diagnose, monitor and cure human cancer.
A major focus is to translate discoveries made at the Kimmel Cancer
Center in the areas of genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular
biology, structural biology, pharmacology, and immunology into novel
modalities for prevention and treatment.
In the realm of basic science, the Kimmel Cancer Center has programs
in Cancer Cell Biology and Signaling, Genetics and Molecular Biology of Cancer,
Immunological Mechanisms in Cancer, Endocrine Mechanisms and Hormone Action
in Cancer, and Structural Biology and Bioinformatics. In the realm of clinical
science, there are programs in Molecular Targets and Developmental Therapeutics,
Hematologic Malignancies and Stem Cell Transplantation, Gastrointestinal Cancer,
Melanoma, and Genito-urinary Cancer. In addition to these programs, there are
numerous core facilities and shared resources available to support the research
in the Kimmel Cancer Center, providing services in areas such as Bioimaging,
Biostatistics, Clinical Trials Support, Computing, Flow Cytometry, Laboratory Animals,
Mass Spectrometry, Microarray, Nucleic Acids, Pathology, Proteomics, Small Animal
Imaging, Small Molecule Screening, Transgenic Mice, X-Ray Crystallography, and
Zebrafish.
