The Wistar Institute Cancer Center conducts leading-edge
basic and translational cancer research. Areas of established scientific
strength include cancer genetics, tumor biology, and immunology. Within
the Cancer Center is the Albert R. Taxin Brain Tumor Research Center,
dedicated to making progress against these difficult-to-treat cancers.
The Wistar Institute Cancer Center is home to one of only three SPORE
(Specialized Programs of Research Excellence) grants targeting skin cancers.
Institute researchers are international leaders in the area of gene expression
and regulation, with pronounced accomplishment in chromatin remodeling
studies. Wistar investigators are elucidating the biogenesis of microRNAs,
small non-coding RNA molecules responsible for targeted gene silencing
in development and differentiation that also play a role in cancer. In
the fast-changing field of systems biology, Wistar scientists are among
those creating the new technologies to push forward genomics- and proteomics-based
cancer investigations. Recent cancer research from Wistar scientists
has appeared in Science, Nature, Cell, and many other high-impact publications,
confirming the creative productivity of Wistar’s intimate, collaborative,
and interdisciplinary scientific culture.
