UAB was designated one of the first 11 “comprehensive” cancer
centers in 1972. Since then, the Center has become a national leader
in research, treatment and education. Today, the UAB Comprehensive Cancer
Center is the only NCI-designated cancer center in a five-state region:
Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi.
The Center, which emphasizes multidisciplinary research
and patient care, has grown to more than 300 faculty
members (including basic and clinical scientists and physicians). It
encompasses more than
150,000 square feet of research space and has more
than $100 million in annual research funding. Faculty expertise includes
tumor biology,
virology/gene therapy, immunobiology, targeted immunotherapy,
neuro-oncology and experimental therapeutics.
