Clinical Trials at this Center

Established in 1884, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) is dedicated to excellence in the prevention, treatment, and cure of cancer through patient care, research, and education. Harold Varmus, MD, has served as President of the Center since January of 2000. Other key leaders are Thomas J. Kelly, MD, PhD, Director of Sloan-Kettering Institute, and Robert Wittes, MD, Memorial Hospital’s Physician-in-Chief.

Physicians at Memorial Hospital offer patients early detection, diagnosis, and individually tailored treatment. Memorial Hospital accommodates approximately 21,000 inpatients per year and more than 431,000 outpatient visits annually. MSKCC initiates and participates in clinical trials to identify more effective cancer therapies. Its physicians are currently leading more than 460 clinical trials for pediatric and adult cancers. The Sloan-Kettering Institute, MSKCC’s basic science research arm, conducts research in eight primary areas: molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, molecular pharmacology and chemistry, structural biology, developmental biology, computational biology, and cancer biology and genetics. Translational research—the translation of laboratory findings into clinical investigation and application, and the transfer of clinical observations back to the laboratory—enables MSKCC to provide patients with the best care available while conducting state-of-the-art research. In 2005, MSKCC established a new hospital-based research program, the Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program, which brings together MSKCC physicians and scientists to meld even more thoroughly the cultures of basic biologic science and clinical oncology.

An essential component of MSKCC’s mission is education, providing unique and comprehensive programs in the study of biomedical sciences and the management of cancer. The recently established Gerstner Sloan-Kettering Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences offers students a curriculum in cancer biology leading to a PhD degree. MSKCC partners with its neighboring institutions—the Weill Medical College of Cornell University and The Rockefeller University—on a number of programs, including an MD/PhD program and PhD programs in computational biology and medicine, as well as in chemical biology.

MSKCC’s main campus and inpatient hospital are located on New York City’s Upper East Side. In addition, there are also five network outpatient treatment sites in New Jersey and Long Island. MSKCC also operates the Breast Examination Center of Harlem, an outreach program to serve the medically underserved in Harlem, and is also an active partner in the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care & Prevention, also located in Harlem.
