The Albert Einstein Cancer Center (AECC) was among the first cancer centers on medical school
campuses to be funded by the National Cancer Institute
in 1972 following passage of the National
Cancer Act. The AECC mission is to promote and facilitate research that will lead to a better
understanding of the origins
of cancer and to its more effective prevention, diagnosis, and
treatment. The spectrum of research encompasses basic, clinical, population-based and translational
investigation that addresses many aspects of the cancer
problem. There are currently 120 AECC members
from
eight basic science and six clinical departments, supported
through national peer-reviewed funding
mechanisms.
AECC encompasses seven interdisciplinary research programs in (i) Immuno-oncology,
(ii) Signaling, Tumor Cell Motility and Invasion, (iii) Cell Growth and Differentiation Control,
(iv) Membrane Molecular Biology, (v) Experimental
Therapeutics, (vi) Cancer Epidemiology and (vii) the
Biology of Colon Cancer. Thirteen established shared
resource facilities plus three developing resources
(Bioinformatics, Genome Imaging, and Laser Capture
Microscopy) support laboratory investigation along
with a Clinical Trials Office and Protocol Review and Monitoring System that support clinical research
activities.
AECC clinical research is conducted at
the two campuses of the Montefiore Medical Center and
the Jacobi Medical Center with participants from the
Departments of Surgery, Medicine, Obstetrics &
Gynecology,
Urology, Pediatrics, and Radiation Oncology. There is an active program of Phase I and II
clinical trials.
AECC faculty are members of, and play leadership roles
in, the Eastern Cooperative
Oncology group, the Gynecologic Oncology Group, and the Children’s Oncology Cooperative
Group. AECC is
based in the Chanin Research Institute.
The Price Center for Genetic and Translational Medicine
(inset) is a new 201,000 square-foot building under construction that will house a major AECC imaging
facility, new mouse facilities, and an expansion of AECC research programs.
