WHAT:		Investigators from an array of life science disciplines are encouraged to seek grant funding through a new HIV vaccine research program of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health. The program aims to spur fundamental research that will contribute directly to the design of a vaccine that prevents HIV infection or substantially slows the progression of HIV disease in people who become infected despite being vaccinated. Through a newly issued Request for Applications (RFA), NIAID will award up to $10 million in fiscal year 2009 for such studies. Created in response to feedback received during NIAID’s March 25th HIV Vaccine Summit, the new funding opportunity endeavors to stimulate basic research in virology, immunology, cellular and structural biology and host genetics with the goal of generating discoveries, broadening knowledge and producing new concepts, approaches and strategies directly applicable to the design of a preventive HIV vaccine. Investigators do not need previous experience in HIV vaccine research to apply. NIAID will accept grant proposals between Nov. 5, 2008, and Jan. 5, 2009.
