Clinical Trials at this Center

The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) is an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The 339 UPCI members are faculty of the University of Pittsburgh with a minority of UPCI members from the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University. The cancer research enterprise is organized into several major areas including; basic research programs, translational research programs, disease-site specific programs, and cancer control and population sciences. There are 11 CCSG-supported programs, 4 developing programs, and 20 CCSG-supported shared facilities that provide services to UPCI members. In 2004 UPCI was ranked 12th among all Cancer Centers in NCI funding. In FY 2005, UPCI researchers received more than $159 million in research support.

UPCI is the cancer research center for the University of Pittsburgh and for the closely linked University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), which includes 19 hospitals and more than 40 UPMC Cancer Center facilities in the tri-state area, extending throughout western Pennsylvania and into adjacent parts of Ohio and West Virginia. UPCI is responsible for the management and coordination of cancer research and care at each of these UPMC institutions. The Hillman Cancer Center which opened in 2002, consolidated and expanded research and clinical operations and provides a cancer-dedicated central base for UPCI, with 178,000 square feet of research facilities, 185,000 square feet of outpatient facilities, 100,000 square feet of office space, and more than 50 beds in the directly adjacent hospital, UPMC Shadyside. The result has been an expansion of UPCI facilities by over 100 percent and, equally important, the improved integration of clinical, laboratory, and population sciences research that accompanied the assignment of a major portion of their activities at one central location.
