Research
Infectious Diseases Laboratory
In addition to providing a broad range
services to support Clinical Center patients the Infectious Diseases
Laboratory conducts important research. Please note the current
research projects of the section below.
Research
Interests
The research component of the Infectious Disease Section is focused
primarily on studies of blood safety and viral hepatitis.
Diagnostic
Procedures
The laboratory is developing and characterizing
serological and molecular diagnostic procedures for viral hepatitis
infection and assessing their value in clinical applications. This
design and evaluation of screening assays for blood will ensure
that the blood supply remains safe.
Vaccine
Development
The
laboratory is developing methods of vaccine design and delivery,
immune augmentation, humoral and cellular immunity assessment, prototype
and pre-clinical studies and analysis, and clinical study design.
Discovery
of otherwise unknown Infectious Agents
The
laboratory is conducting viral and other infectious agent discovery
projects. This study methodology includes sample assessment, conventional
and molecular isolation technology development and evaluation, animal
transmission studies, novel agent determination and characterization,
disease association and clinical value assessment.
