ah, yes, i forgot to include some crucial details...
we were able to run both 8 and 16 subject 3dmerge jobs before on both workstations with the older distribution of afni.
the beefiest has 1.5 gigs swap and 258 megs ram.
the 16 subject merge file takes up 473 megs.
i've started another 3dmerge job with fewer regressors and can report
on whether that runs its course.
