Director: Nutrient Metabolism Program
Director: GI Transport and Absorption Program
Director: GI Neuroendocrinology Program
Budget Coordinator: Division of Digestive Diseases & Nutrition
Management of the Nutrient Metabolism portfolio which focuses on basic and clinical
studies related to the requirement, bioavailability, and metabolism of dietary
components at the organ, cellular and subcellular levels, as well as nutrient influence on
gene regulation and expression, in normal and diseased states. The GI Transport and
Absorption Program supports research on food digestion, absorption and transport of
water, ions, sugars, amino acids, peptides, amino acids, peptides, lipids, vitamins and
macromolecules. Other areas focus on regulation of gene expression in the GI tract,
development and differentiation and processes and treatment of intestinal failure,
including intestinal transplantation. The GI Neuroendocrinology Program includes
studies on both the function and regulation of the enteric nervous system as well as
gastrointestinal hormones and peptides. These entail structure-function relationships,
receptor function and regulation, correlation with physiological events and studies of
related disease conditions. Budget Coordinator management of fiscal aspects of the
Division’s plans for research requires collation of fiscal information from all research
programs, projection of future fiscal needs, and recommendation of approaches for
managing available resources most effectively under the Division’s budget. This
requires collation of fiscal information for staff and Council members for each of three
Council Meetings Advisory that are necessary to assess commitments for the year and
to track funds available for competing applications, supplements, and special emphasis
awards leading to development of pay plans.
