Ecology

Superfund Basic Research Program

The chemical contaminants at Superfund sites can have profound effects on all living things. Some key areas of ecology research include studies of how contaminants affect specific species, communities of organisms, and ecological processes, including how contaminants are transferred through food webs. In addition to its ecological relevance, this research has implications for human well being. The physiological responses observed in organisms living in contaminated environments can be used as early warning systems for potential adverse human health effects. The knowledge gained from this research can contribute significantly to measuring the risks environmental contaminants pose to ecosystems and humans.
