How does the LASP-Bethesda help you with the ACUC review process for your research studies?
The LASP-Bethesda staff provides consultation services to help the investigator prepare an Animal Study Proposal (ASP) that will proceed through the ACUC review process in a timely manner.

We can help you with the design, animal model selection, analgesia/anesthesia, as well as address animal welfare, care, and health issues before the study is submitted to the ACUC for review and approval. Ideally, one of the LASP-Bethesda veterinarians and the ACUC Coordinator meets with the investigator (well before the ACUC deadline for submission) and provides input for the animals use aspects of the ASP. We suggest you contact the LASP-Bethesda veterinarian or the ACUC Coordinator at least one month before the deadline for submitting your proposal to the ACUC.

This process facilitates quick turn around for ASP approval and allows investigators to begin their research with minimal delay. Please see here for a schedule of submission deadlines and ACUC meetings. .

Suggested Method For Developing An ASP

  1. The investigator develops an idea for a study.
  2. The investigator uses the LASP-Bethesda website and/or contacts the LASP-Bethesda veterinarian and/or ACUC Coordinator for guidance on specific animal issues and helpful language for their study.
  3. The investigator completes a draft of the Animal Study Proposal.
  4. The investigator submits a copy to Lab Animal Sciences Program - Bethesda one month before the meeting.
  5. The LASP-Bethesda veterinarian and ACUC Coordinator conduct a pre-review of the Animal Study Proposal and request any necessary clarifications from the PI to fine-tune it for the meeting.
  6. Necessary revisions are made at the latest one week before the meeting and distributed to ACUC members.

Key Points To Remember For ASP Development
Use the current NCI ASP form. In order to comply with various regulations, the LASP-Bethesda form frequently requires updating and modification. To ensure you are working with the most recent version of the form, please work with the form directly from this site.

Save your electronic ASP form to facilitate modifications and renewals.

Investigators must document they have considered alternatives to procedures listed for Category 2 and 3 studies that may cause more than momentary or slight pain or distress to the animals whether alleviated (Category 2) or not (Category 3). Also, the investigator must indicate that alternatives were not available, or justify why alternatives found are not appropriate for the study.

A database search is an effective tool for providing this information to the ACUC. We recommend using Alternatives to Animal Testing when searching for this information. Once completed, you will need to indicate in Section G on the ASP form: the databases searched, the date the search was conducted, the key words used, the period covered by the search, and a brief narrative of the results. The NIH Library is an excellent resource to assist you and will perform the search. A tutorial is also offered.

Provide information as requested in the direction on the ASP form. Following suggestions provided on the ASP handout will help get your ASP through the ACUC review in a timely manner.
