Rep. Watson Celebrates Successful Conclusion of
“100 Hours Agenda”

Washington, DC— Congresswoman Diane E. Watson joined House Democrats in bringing the "100 Hours Agenda" to a successful conclusion – fulfilling Democrats’ promise to pass legislation reflecting the values and priorities of the American people within the first 100 legislative hours in the House of Representatives.

"The American people said they wanted a new direction for America, and that’s what we have aimed to do in the first 100 hours of the new session of Congress," said Congresswoman Watson. "From sweeping ethics reform, to restoring fiscal responsibility, to strengthening our national security, to giving more Americans a realistic shot at the American Dream, the new Democratic Majority is committed to real and lasting results for the people we serve."

The House has passed the following legislation since the start of the 110th Congress:

  • Ethics Reform, 1/4/07, Passed 430-1
  • Restoring Fiscal Responsibility, 1/5/07, Passed 280-152

100 Hours Legislation

  • Implementing the 9/11 Commission Recommendations, 1/9/07, Passed 299-128
  • Increasing the Minimum Wage, 1/10/07, Passed 315-116
  • Expanding Stem Cell Research, 1/11/07, Passed 253-174
  • Requiring Negotiation for Lower Prescription Drug Costs, 1/12/07, Passed 255-170
  • Cutting Interest Rates on Student Loans, 1/17/07, Passed 357-71
  • Ending Subsidies for Big Oil and Investing in Renewable Energy, 1/18/07, Passed 264-163

"Each of the six bills in the "100 Hours Legislation" passed with bipartisan majorities – in some cases with large bipartisan majorities," said Congresswoman Watson. "The American people want their leaders to focus on American priorities and work together to get things done – reaching across the aisle to pass measures that will make a real difference in people’s lives. And that’s what we have done in the first 100 hours."

"Finally, I am very pleased to note that H.R. 6, a bill to end subsidies for big oil, addresses the failure of companies to pay royalties on oil and natural gas extracted from federal lands in the Gulf of Mexico.  As the Ranking Member of the House Government Reform Subcommittee on Energy and Resources, I fought to ensure that America’s taxpayers are not slighted by this mismanagement of our nation’s natural resources. The legislation requires oil companies awarded drilling leases in 1988 and 1999, and  exempted from royalty payments, to pay their fair share in royalties to the federal government."
