The Capture of Charles Taylor | ||||
Washington, DC— Congresswoman Diane E. Watson (CA-33) released the following statement on the capture of Charles Taylor yesterday evening by Nigerian authorities: “The news of the capture of Charles Taylor by Nigerian security forces is a victory for the people of Africa. It is also a step forward for the idea that leaders are accountable to their people for their actions while in office. “President Obasanjo and the Nigerian authorities deserve credit for their quick action to apprehend Taylor. I hope that President Obasanjo will pursue an investigation into how exactly Taylor escaped from Calabar and hold those responsible for his disappearance accountable. “At this moment, Taylor is reported to be en route to the custody of the court. Given the events of the last two days, I think we need to remain vigilant to ensure that Taylor arrives at the Special Court as soon as possible. We must remember that Taylor has not been indicted by any court in Liberia. His crimes are crimes against humanity, and he needs to go directly to the Special Court in Sierra Leone so that he can answer for his deeds.”
