Living the Dream or Shattering the Legacy?

Dr. Martin Luther King Day is rapidly approaching.  Some people will celebrate because they have the day off, while others will use the day for reflection on what Dr. King stood for. He took responsibility to spearhead a national Civil Rights Movement. Many people throughout the United States remember Dr. Martin Luther King as a man that inspired others to unite and accomplish the impossible.  Have we as Americans become stagnant in upholding Dr. King’s legacy?

Dr. King dedicated his life to a cause he believed in and used his voice to speak up and consequently, caused others to unleash their own power. Collaboratively, through perseverance Dr. King and his followers made the dream a reality.  One must ask today, what has changed since the effective Boycott Movement compared to present time apathy? Has America continued to make progress towards equality for all nationalities? Or are we satisfied with the current conditions of the underserved?

Yes, it is tradition to celebrate the man who fought for fundamental freedoms for all people. However, we must ask ourselves if we as Americans have picked up the torch from where Dr. King left off.  Are we fulfilling his legacy? What are we standing for in today’s world?

With dedication, triumph and steadfastness Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his life to change the bounds of segregation, and once said, “A man who won’t die for something is not fit to live.”

As you reflect upon your lives ask yourselves what inspires you to make your life worth living.  It’s been more than 40 years since the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King.  It took Dr. King and his followers more than a year of peaceful demonstrations of not riding the Montgomery buses to revolutionize history.  He was one man with a dream. Let us realize that we are Dr. King’s legacy.  Live the dream and fulfill the legacy.
