Congresswoman Watson Announces Funding for Mayme Clayton Library – One of the Largest Collections of Documents on Black America – and Other Projects in the 33rd |

Washington, DC—Congresswoman Watson announced that the Western States Black Research and Education Center is scheduled to receive a $250,000 federal grant to refurbish its facility located in Culver City, California. The center – known as the Mayme Clayton Library – houses one of the largest collections of rare books, films, recordings, and other documents on black Americans. “Funding for the Mayme Clayton Library is critical,” said Congresswoman Watson. “It ensures that information documenting the rich history and experience of blacks in America will be preserved. Mayme Clayton, a renowned librarian, worked her entire life to assemble a priceless collection of historical artifacts. I am pleased that Ms. Clayton’s heroic efforts have not been in vain but can rightfully serve as historical and intellectual nourishment for this generation as well as future generations of Americans.” Congresswoman Watson also announced that the following projects, located in the 33rd Congressional district, will receive federal funds in fiscal year 2008:
