Deborah Winn, PhD, was appointed Chief of the Clinical and Genetic Epidemiology Research Branch in June 2004 and served as Acting Chief since the spring of 2002. She is also a Senior Epidemiologist for Tobacco and Cancer Epidemiology in the Office of the EGRP Associate Director. Before joining DCCPS in late 2000, she was a Senior Investigator and Branch Chief for oral epidemiology for eight years at the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research of the National Institutes of Health. Prior to that, she worked at the National Center for Health Statistics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For five of her seven years there, she was the Deputy Director of the Division of Health Interview Statistics, with broad responsibilities for planning, implementing, and analyzing the National Health Interview Survey.
Dr. Winn received her PhD in epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1980. She has published more than 45 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in her major research areas, including the epidemiology of oral cancer and other tobacco-related cancers, and oral diseases. She is especially well known nationally and internationally for her work and writings on smokeless tobacco and the etiology of oral cancer.
Dr. Winn is an associate editor of Tobacco Control and Oral Diseases and has held several offices for the Behavioral Science and Health Services Group of the International Association for Dental Research. She is a recipient of the Public Health Service Superior Service Award, two Awards of Merit from NIH, and a U.S. Public Health Service Chief Dental Officer’s Exemplary Service Award.
