Clinical Research : NIDDK

Clinical Research

Clinical research is patient-oriented research. Research may be conducted in human volunteers or on samples from humans. NIH-funded studies are carefully designed to answer specific medical questions while protecting participants' safety. Well conducted clinical trials are the fastest and safest way to find improved treatments and preventions for diseases. Clinical trials or interventional trials determine whether experimental preventions, treatments, or new ways of using known therapies are safe and effective under controlled conditions. Observational or natural history studies examine health issues and disease development in groups of people or populations. Understanding Clinical Trials

For Clinical Researchers

Funding Opportunities (FOAs)
Find the current Requests for Applications (RFA) and Program Announcements (PAs) that communicate NIDDK's current funding opportunities and research interests.

Investigator-Initiated Multi-Center Clinical Studies
NIDDK supports investigator-initiated, multi-center clinical studies through a two part grant process:(1) an implementation planning (U34) grant followed by (2) a cooperative agreement (U01) to conduct the study.

Ancillary Studies to Ongoing Clinical Research
NIDDK invites applications for ancillary studies to certain ongoing large-scale clinical trials, epidemiological studies and disease databases supported by either NIDDK or NHLBI.

Resources for Researchers
NIDDK supports a variety of resources for the benefit of the investigator community.  Select a category below, or visit our Scientific Areas to find resources specific for each.

Central NIDDK Repositories
Collections of biosamples,  immortalized cell lines.  DNA and data collected in NIDDK-sponsored clinical studies made available to the broader research community.

Conferences and Workshops
NIDDK conducts a variety of public conferences in its areas of interest.  See our calendar of upcoming events and the reports from our past conferences.

NIDDK Clinical Research Policies
The following policies must be followed for all NIDDK-funded research that uses human subjects.
