Interactive Health Education Tools from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Learn about Kidney and Urologic Diseases Using Interactive Tools

NIH Podcasts—Digital recordings of NIH Research Radio broadcasts available for downloading to a personal audio player or a computer. NIH Research Radio provides the latest information about NIH research findings, highlights of press conferences, and health campaigns in 20- to 30- minute radio broadcasts every 2 weeks. Listed below are segments from the radio programs that relate to kidney and urologic diseases. Information about system requirements and a full listing of current and archived podcasts can be accessed through NIH Podcast.

NIH Vodcasts—Digital recordings made available for downloading to a personal video player or computer. Vodcasting, also called video podcasting or videocasting, adds video to the downloadable sound files to which podcast listeners are accustomed. After downloading and saving a vodcast, users can choose when and where they want to watch the video. Information about system requirements and a full listing of current and archived vodcasts can be accessed through NIH Vodcast.

Streaming Audio—Audio files that may be played from your desktop. RealPlayer is required to listen to these streams. If you do not have RealPlayer, you will be prompted to obtain a free download of the software before you listen to the presentation. You can download the RealPlayer media player at www.real.com. These audio files are from NIH Research Radio.

Tutorials—Interactive slideshows designed to educate patients about different diseases and medical procedures. (Full list of interactive health tutorials from the NLM)

Tests and Diagnostic Procedures

NKDEP Tools—The National Kidney Disease Education Program offers additional interactive tools for patients and health care professionals.

Surgical Videos—Pre-recorded webcasts of surgical procedures from the NLM. These webcasts are of actual operations performed at medical centers in the United States since January 2004. The videos last 1 hour. Please note that you cannot send questions by email, because you are not seeing these videos live, though the webcast may say you can. (Full library of surgical videos from the NLM)

NIH VideoCasting—Videos of special NIH events, seminars, and lectures available to viewers through the NIH network and the VideoCast website. More information about system requirements and upcoming and past events can be accessed through NIH VideoCasting.

Prevention and Wellness Tools—Interactive resources that will help you to properly monitor your health through diet and exercise and stay healthy.

Curriculum Available From the NIH—A variety of lesson plans, educational materials, and classroom activities for teachers and students to reference.
