Transferring Your License Plate
To transfer your plates to a different vehicle:
  • Plates must be transferred to the same type of vehicle to which they were originally issued; for example, plates that were on a passenger vehicle may be transferred to another passenger vehicle, but not to a motor home.
  • Plates must be of current issue or specialty background or customized license plates.
  • Plates must be legible for identification purposes.
 
The fee for plate transfer is $6.  Renewing the registration is an additional fee. For renewal information, see below.
 
You must also complete an application for plate transfer. If you:
 
Do I need a DEQ Certificate to transfer my license plate?
No, you do not, unless you are renewing your registration at the same time.
 
What about renewing the registration at the time of plate transfer?
  • If the plates are expired, you must renew the registration at the time of plate transfer:
    •   follow Option B.
  • If there are more than 90 days of registration left on the plates you want to transfer:
    •   follow Option A.
  • If there are 90 days or less of registration left on the plates you want to transfer:
    • to renew now, follow Option B; or
    • to renew later, follow Option A.
 
Option A   – transfer plate without renewing registration Option B – transfer plate and renew registration at the same time
  • If the registration fee for the new vehicle is greater than on the old vehicle, pay the difference in fees for the full registration period.
  • Pay the license plate transfer fee ($6.00).
  • If you are converting license plate configuration to custom, pay the custom license plate fee.
  • The expiration date will remain the same.
  • If there are 90 days or less of the current registration period remaining, you will not receive a renewal reminder.
  • Pay the full registration renewal fee for the new vehicle.
  • Pay the license plate transfer fee ($6.00).
  • If they are Salmon or group license plates, pay the surcharge specific to those license plates.
  • The expiration day and month will remain the same, only the year will change.
  • If there are 90 days or less of the current registration period remaining, you will not receive a renewal reminder.
  • If you are converting to custom license plates, you must also pay the custom plate fee.
