Pelosi Statement on Rosh Hashanah

Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement on the eve of Rosh Hashanah – the Jewish New Year:
“As Rosh Hashanah begins this evening I send my best wishes the Jewish Community for a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.
“During this period of reflection and introspection, we take time to review our actions this past year and consider how we can improve ourselves and the world in which we live. I join with all of you in a humble prayer that this year we continue our work for justice.
“On the eve of Rosh Hashanah, we rededicate ourselves to ending poverty and bringing peace to the world. As we consider the economic challenges facing our nation, we send our thoughts to those who are struggling to feed, clothe, and shelter their families. We think of those threatened by oppression and genocide, we think of our brave men and women in uniform, and we think of the ways each of us can bring an end to all wars and conflict.
“This year we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the State of Israel. It has been a time of great celebration, and as Speaker of the House I had the great privilege of bringing a Congressional Resolution to the Knesset in Jerusalem this past May recognizing this important milestone.
“However amid our revelry, we had loss as well. After holding out hope for almost two years for the return of Israeli Soldiers Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, our hope was replaced by grief. We pledge to redouble our efforts on behalf of Gilad Shalit who was captured in Gaza the same year. We will remember them and the other sacrifices Israel has made for peace.
“May this new year be one of peace for the United States, the state of Israel, and all countries of the world. Best wishes for a Shanah Tovah.”
