Four years ago, book-lover Kaitlin Gastrock volunteered to read to second graders at an urban school. She had no idea that one day she would be shaking hands with Governor Kaine and receiving the 2008 Governor's Volunteerism and Community Service Awards Youth Volunteer as the result of her good work there.
As part of this project, Kaitlin designed, implemented, and secured funds for a 4-H literacy program for young readers. At the young age of 18, Kaitlin also helped fifth graders create their own books, co-taught a summer day camp, worked with the South Anna 4-H club, won the Hanover County Youth Volunteer Award in 2007, spoke with delegates at the Legislative Trail Ride, and participated in a yearly Communication Arts scholar program. On top of all this, she made excellent grades in school.

At Echo Glen Children's Center, a state-operated juvenile correctional facility in Snoqualmie, WA, youth are learning important life skills--such as how to be responsible and care for others--via Canine Connections, a program that brings unwanted dogs and incarcerated youth together.
The program started after Jo Simpson, a long-time supervisor at Echo Glen and also a veteran 4-H leader and dog trainer, decided that youth at the correctional facility could really benefit from working with animals. A canine program would not only encourage the young offenders to have fun, but it would also build their confidence and self-esteem as they move past their initial fear of the dog to a trusting, caring relationship based on mutual respect.

The Kids' Science Challenge is a nationwide competition for 3rd to 6th graders. Kids are encouraged to learn about four fun scientific fields and then submit a question, problem, or experiment to be solved, working together with a scientist or engineer.
The scientific fields are: flavor science, water quality, skateboard engineering, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). Winners will receive a trip to visit the scientists to work collaboratively on their question, problem or experiment, and will be featured on Pulse of the Planet radio programs and podcasts.
