About the Health Communication and
Informatics Research Branch

Providing communication leadership across the cancer continuum

Mission Statement

From primary prevention to survivorship and end-of-life care, and all points in between, communication plays a vital role in reducing the burden of cancer. The mission of the Health Communication and Informatics Research Branch is to contribute to the reduction in death and suffering due to cancer by supporting research and development of a seamless health communication and informatics infrastructure. Through internal and extramural programs, the Branch supports basic and translational research across the cancer continuum that will benefit consumers, patients, caregivers and health care professionals; from prevention to treatment, through survivorship, and end of life.

How we fit into NCI, DCCPS, BRP

The Health Communication and Informatics Research Branch (HCIRB) is embedded within the Behavioral Research Program (BRP). Our branch is an interdisciplinary collection of professionals with expertise in communication and informatics sciences, psychology, public health nutrition, anthropology, epidemiology, statistics, and analysis. We partner with researchers, end users, and stakeholders by advocating scientifically rigorous, user-centered research and development.

Our sister branches emphasize research on cancer screening, basic biobehavioral research, tobacco control, and health promotion (e.g., diet and physical activity). Another closely aligned branch is the Office of Cancer Survivorship. All the BRP branches share grant mechanisms such as the behavioral R03 and R21, and all use the investigator initiated R01 mechanism.
